The Y.O. Ranch started its hunting heritage when Myrtle Schreiner contemplated what the ranch could sell in addition to cattle, sheep and goats. The answer was white-tailed deer hunts and in 1943 she leased the ranch to Petty Geophysical Engineering for hunting. Since that time, the Y.O. Ranch has been a destination for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Today, the ranch offers seasonal hunting opportunities for native game and year-round opportunities for 30 species of exotic game. The Y.O. Adventure Camp has been cooperating with the ranch since 1977 with youth in the outdoors. We believe that by hosting camp for hunting, we can play a major role in saving the "heritage that is hunting."
Basic Hunting Camp sessions starts with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Hunter's Education and Safety Course. All campers 9 and older will take their test and upon passing receive their temporary card. In addition campers that already hold their Hunter's Education and Safety card will still go through the instruction as review. We believe that safety and education is the most important part of hunting and we have certified instructors on site year round.
Campers will be taught the necessary skills to be a knowledgeable outdoors person. These skills and instruction include archery, shotguns, learning the importance of hunting, conservation and wildlife management, wilderness survival skills, outdoor cooking, camping and participate in wildlife projects. Campers finally put their skills to test through harvesting a management ram with one of our trained hunting guides. All of our hunting camps include a management ram, with the option to upgrade to a trophy.
Outdoor Wildlife Conservation is the theme of all Y.O. Ranch Adventure Camp hunting program activities. Our objective is to produce a well-rounded, environmentally conscious, outdoor hunter who enjoys traditional hunting techniques passed down from generation to generation. Another goal that we strive for is to make each camper an advocate for ethical hunting in order to dispel myths and misunderstandings about this sport. We achieve this through four activity themes that guarantee fun, excitement and personal growth: outdoor related skills, wildlife and environmental education, firearm safety and hunting.
